If you are a fan of The Last of Us, this news might upset you. Today, Naughty Dog announced it has cancelled the multiplayer mode or game for The Last of Us universe. That said, what should you know about it?
For your information, Naughty Dog says it was in pre-production for The Last of Us Online while working on The Last of Us Part II. The blog post says, “We were enthusiastic about the direction in which we were headed,”. But that is not all, Naughty Dogs also says:
“However, “to release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post-launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games,”
“So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage.”
As a result, the studio chose the latter one. Interestingly, Naughty Dog says there could be “more than one” big new single-player title for future releases. Furthermore, this cancellation means The Last of Us Online is one of the 12 live service games that got pushed back. Previously, Sony intended to release these games by March 2026. Now, we might see only 6 games.
