Sony image sensors seem to be in every phone and the high demand is showing. According to Bloomberg, this is the second December in a row in which the company had to keep its camera chip factories running on the clock. This is to keep up with the high demand for image sensors used in mobile phones. Poor Sony factory workers...
Sony has plans to increase its manufacturing capacity, however, with a new plant in Nagasaki expected to officially open in April 2021. The company had also increased its capital spending this year on image sensor manufacturing to 2.6 billion USD (~RM10.74 billion). But even that may be insufficient, according to the report.
Semiconductors are now Sony's second most profitable business and it owes much to this demand in image sensors for smartphones. With the number of cameras in smartphones on the rise, this demand is expected to continue increasing. In fact, Sony is predicting that revenue for semiconductors will be around 1.04 trillion yen (~RM393 billion) next year with image sensors accounting for 86% of that revenue, which is a lot.
