Looks like a huge change is coming from Microsoft. After almost 30 years, the company will remove its iconic WordPad from future releases. That said, why did this happen? Why now?

In case you didn’t know, Microsoft intends to remove the word processor from future Windows releases. As a result, the company has stopped rolling out updates for the app. Instead, you will be recommended Microsoft Word.

Moreover, this paid Word processor is a superior version of the WordPad with more features. This news came out after Microsoft revealed it’s upgrading Notepad with features like autosave and automatic restoral of tabs. Interestingly, the NotePad had a significant upgrade in 2018 after years of obscurity. It also received the features of the new tab for the Windows 11 version. A recent support note by Microsoft says:

“WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future release of Windows,”. “We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt.”

On the other hand, the WordPad only received a slight re-design in Windows 8. It has never received additional updates or revamps ever since. As a result, we could expect the app to be removed completely from Windows 12.
