Nokia X2-01 Review

The Nokia X2-01 looks nothing like the original X2, although they have the same version of Symbian Operating System. As I said before, the build quality of this phone is pretty good, the way the phone is shaped makes it quite easy to hold in the hands, but it may be a little too big and bulky for some people!

Nokia X2-01: Design & Build

The Nokia X2-01 is clad in dark gray plastic with a glossy black front bezel; for now, that's the only color choice. The X2-01 measures 4.7 by 2.4 by 0.6 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.8 ounces. It's not the slimmest device on the market, but it looks fine next to a BlackBerry Curve, and that's good company to be in for a prepaid phone. Six function keys bracket a five-way control pad with a pronounced plastic ridge. Typing on the four-row QWERTY keyboard was a little stiff, but the slightly bubbled keys are roomy and well-arranged.

Nokia X2-01: Display

The 2.4-inch LCD offers 320-by-240-pixel resolution, and offers good brightness and sharpness for a low-end phone. The screen does suffer from bad viewing angles. Watching videos on the screen are not exactly grainy but the colors seem to be washed out, yet that did not totally ruin the video experience!

Nokia X2-01: OS

The S40 6th Edition Operating System is quite simple and gets the job done for this budget friendly Mobile Phone. The phone has Home Screen shortcuts as well as the Go to shortcut so that you can start your applications without actually going though the Main Menu! The main reason a person will buy this phone is because of its QWERTY keyboard and Music Stereo Speakers.

Nokia X2-01: Multimedia

The UI of the Music Player is neat and easy to use. You can use it with ease and without any problems. The only downside here is that the phone does not have a volume rocker, so you will need to start the music application every time you need to reduce and increase the volume. This phone also supports videos but the low resolution screen wont give you a unique experience. On the other side, the Speakers will provide a superb experience.

Nokia X2-01: Apps

The Nokia Ovi Store is also inbuilt in this phone and the apps in the store are decent enough for anyone to get the most out of this Phone. The Nokia Community allows you to Sync your various Social Networking Accounts. For testing purpose, I added my twitter and Facebook account, and the Sync process was done without any flaws. The Operating System also allows you to perform Copy and Paste Tasks very easily.

Nokia X2-01: Web Browsing

Web browsing on this mobile is slow as it only supports EDGE Class 32, and because you have to use the D-Pad for scrolling, this can be a pain for many people. The phone rendered the desktop version of this website quite well, but  there’s a lag during scrolling from Top to Bottom OR from Left to Right, primarily because of lower memory (64 MB) in the phone.

Nokia X2-01: Camera & Video

The phone comes with a 0.3 Megapixel VGA Camera, so dont expect high quality pics. When you view the snapped images in your phone, they will look quite clear, but when you transfer them to your computer, you will see that the quality of these pictures are very grainy in their original resolution. The interface of the camera application is good enough to get the job done.

The same quality applies to the videos, the videos are very grainy and have low resolution, mainly because its maximum shooting resolution is 360*240 pixels. The UI of the Video Application is the same as you will will see in any other series 40 handset.

Nokia X2-01: Call Quality

When we speak about Call Quality of this phone, the performance is average. The front speakers of the phone  produces lots of static noise which can be a major problem for many users. In our case, the listener didn’t find any problems in hearing us speak.

Nokia X2-01: Battery

The battery life on this phone is quite good. It gave us approximately 6 hrs of Talk Time and lasted for a week at Standby. We can say, the battery life of Nokia X2-01 is superb.

Nokia X2-01: Keyboard

The quality of QWERTY keyboard of Nokia X2-01 is also average. The keys are cramped and take time to get used to. The QWERTY keys makes a CLICK Sound when pressed, though I didn’t find the clicking of the keys irritating, but some people may get irritated with the clicking sound of the keys. The keys are all elevated and shaped almost the same, there is no different key shape for left thumb and right thumb like there is on the Samsung ch@t.

Nokia X2-01: Speaker

The speaker performance of this phone is quite good. Though the Nokia Earphones provided in the box are not great enough, the volume in the Earphones are very low even at full Volume and if you want to listen to Music using this Phone in a Noisy Environment, you will be disappointed. You may like to use some other quality earphone with this Phone for good performance.

Conclusion:

Though Nokia X2-01 has nothing new to offer, its has the wow factor! And all thanks to Nokia’s design team. Appealing design which makes it feel richer than it actually costs. No matter the age group it is targeted on, everyone gets an immediate crush on the phone especially with  its ultra-comfy keyboard. If you’re texting and ‘IM’ing addict who’s looking for a total value for money product the X2-01 is a great buy.
