HMD Global, having launched the Nokia 6 in China initially, had announced that they are going global. Starting with the Nokia 6, it will be joined by the Nokia 5 and Nokia 3 which were unveiled today. All three phones will come in Q217 in both single and dual-SIM variants. Like the Nokia 6, both the Nokia 5 and 3 are smartphones that will run on pure Android Nougat.

Nokia 6

Let’s start with the Nokia 6 that we have all been familiar with. It’s the highest spec-ed Nokia device for now. Nothing really new here. Though, for the global version of the device, it will come with Google Assistant along with the full set of Google services. It costs €229 (about RM1074), and will feature only 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage, slightly marked down from the Chinese model. It will have a choice of Matte Black, Tempered Blue, Silver, Copper as colour options. If you’re wishing that there’ll be a similar 4GB RAM and 64GB storage model, similar to the Chinese model, well, there’s an “Arte Black” variant that costs €299 (about RM1402). That is, HMD Global’s fancy way of naming its piano black high gloss colour scheme.

As for rest of the phone, if you still hadn’t kept up with the Nokia 6, they are largely the same as before. A 5.5-inch Full HD (1080p) IPS display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, dual speakers with Dolby Atmos, 16-megapixel PDAF rear camera with dual-tone flash, 8-megapixels front camera, and a 3000mAh battery.

Nokia 5

Nokia_5_range.pngThe second Nokia smartphone being announced is the new Nokia 5, which is the younger brother to the Nokia 6. It had been slightly spec-ed down from the Nokia 6, while keeping the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor, 8MP front camera and 3000mAh battery, it gets a smaller 5.2-inch HD (720p) IPS display, and just 2GB of RAM with 16GB of expandable storage. The camera also sees a downgrade to a 13MP unit, though PDAF and the dual-tone flash had been retained. The dual speakers with Dolby Atmos support from the Nokia 6, had however, been removed.

In a way, this is a watered down Nokia 6 for those that wanted a smaller Nokia Android smartphone. The Nokia 5 will be priced at €189 (about RM886) and will be available in the same colour options as the Nokia 6, which are, Tempered Blue, Silver, Matte Black and Copper.

Nokia 3

Just when you thought they are done with the Nokia 6 and Nokia 3, there’s an even more pared-down model, the Nokia 3. Seemingly the bottom of the current line-up, priced at €139 (about RM652), there were obviously corners cut to make up for the price. Notably, instead of a full aluminium body of its elder brothers, the Nokia 3, is only limited to an aluminium frame with a polycarbonate body, which helps in cutting cost, without necessarily reducing much of the solid feeling and rigidity of the device. The rest of the phone tells a different story though.

It will have a 5-inch HD (720p) display with polarizer for better sunlight visibility, and will be powered by a MediaTek MT6737 processor. Surprisingly, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage had been retained, which further shows that Nokia, while trying to market a more budget phone, is trying to keep a smooth user experience without being too spec-ed down. Both front and rear cameras will have 8MP resolution. The battery had been slightly reduced to 2650mAh as well. As with being a Nokia, they come in a multitude of distinctive colour choices, namely, Silver White, Matte Black, Tempered Blue and Copper White.

All these 3 Nokia smartphones do get Corning’s Gorilla Glass protection on their display. And, oh, HMD Global is also very proud of the fact that it takes an hour to craft each Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 out of a single block of 6000-series aluminium. You may watch the video above on how they’re made, with quality and craftsmanship as priority.

Also common amongst these Nokia smartphones unveiled today, is that they will all run pure Android Nougat with minimal bloatware, along with the full set of Google Services, as well as featuring intergrated Google Assistant. While staying clutter-free, this also facilities easier deployment of regular software updates, keeping them secure and up to date. Also, while both the Nokia 6 and Nokia 5 comes with a fingerprint sensor, the Nokia 3, being the budget model, will omit this feature.

There had thus far been no official news on local availability yet, with these smartphones making its global availability in Q2 2017, we'll be seeing them in Malaysia soon. Stay tuned on TechNave.com for the latest news when they see a local launch.
