O-Film shows off prototype of new periscope camera with continuous zoom

Due to form factor and size, manufacturers always have to push the boundaries of what they can fit in smartphones. When it comes to cameras, the space limitation means you can't put too many with large sensors inside or those with fancy mechanisms. But O-Film is looking to break the mould with its newly completely prototype periscope camera.

According to GSMArema, O-Film's new prototype is only 5.9mm in thickness. This means that it will able to fit inside smartphones, without having to result in a noticeable camera bump. The module can provide continuous zoom with the range from 85mm to 170mm. Theoretically, this particular module can deliver 3x to 7x optical zoom. But O-Film can also make modules with different zoom ranges like 3x to 5x or 5x to 8x.

Going back to the continuous zoom part, the motor component inside the module is what does it. As the user adjusts the focal length, the motor moves the 3-lens assembly and autofocus system accordingly. But with most smartphones, the focal lengths are fixed at certain intervals and the software is used to switch between the zoom levels. The advantage of continuous zoom is you'll get more control over how much you want to zoom.

To put it in simpler terms, this prototype module could mean much better periscope cameras that are more compact. It'll be interesting to see which brand gets around to using this type of camera first. With that said, what do you think about the camera?
