OPPO is gearing up to launch the Reno8 series in India soon. Before that happens, the brand announces that the devices will feature a technology that was once exclusive to the flagships, and it's the MariSilicon X NPU. If you haven't heard of it, it's actually OPPO's self-developed imaging chip that helps improve camera performance.

With the chip, the Reno8 series can render dark skin tones accurately and create Bokeh Flare Portrait videos. Alongside OPPO's AI, it can even distinguish between skin blemishes and beauty spots and smartly apply different levels of beautification and skin smoothening based on the age and sex of the subject. There's also an improvement in HDR performance across wide exposure shots without user intervention.

To get more technical, the MariSilicon X NPU took the company three years to develop after considering over 400 patent applications. It packs 3.6 billion transistors and can perform up to 18 trillion operations per second (18 TOPS). Furthermore, it is built on a 6nm process and capable of real-time lossless AI processing in the Bayer RAW domain with images taken from the 50MP IMX766 primary camera.
