With the recent announcement of the Google Pixel 6 series, Google has joined Apple, Samsung and Huawei for making its own chipset - the Google Tensor. Besides these phone brands, other Android phone manufacturers rely on either Qualcomm or MediaTek for chipsets. However, there are now new reports that OPPO is developing a new chipset as well.

According to Nikkei Asia, OPPO will focus on the chipset for high-end and premium smartphones. Sources also say that the unannounced SoC should be released in 2023 or 2024 if they are on schedule, as well as using a 3nm technology offered by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Moreover, OPPO developing its own chipset could aid the issue of the current processor shortages and disruptions.

Apart from that, OPPO is also continuing to work on its own AI algorithms and customised image signal processors. Nikkei Asia also noted that OPPO has been hiring a few top chip developers and AI experts within the industry with the likes from Qualcomm, MediaTek and Huawei. Of course, OPPO has no comments about this, but told the media "Any R&D investment is to enhance product competitiveness and user experience".
