Online scams in Malaysia continue to escalate, with new data showing a sharp rise in both financial losses and the diversity of victims. According to a report by Bernama, Perak alone recorded 4848 online fraud cases in 2025, resulting in total losses of RM124.99 million.
Scams Affecting All Segments of Society
Authorities say online fraud is no longer limited to a specific demographic. Victims now span all age groups and professions, including civil servants, private sector workers, retirees, and increasingly, students. While senior citizens remain the most vulnerable group, recent trends indicate a worrying rise in cases involving younger individuals, particularly students. Gender distribution among victims is also nearly equal, highlighting how widespread and indiscriminate these scams have become.
The most frequently reported scams include telecommunications fraud such as fake calls and phishing attempts, followed by non-existent investment schemes, e-commerce scams, and love scams. Authorities also noted a growing trend of more sophisticated fraud tactics, including those leveraging artificial intelligence technologies, making scams harder to detect and prevent.
The increasing use of advanced technologies in scams reflects a broader shift in cybercrime tactics. Fraudsters are becoming more organised and technically capable, allowing them to target victims more effectively. This has raised concerns among policymakers, as traditional awareness campaigns may no longer be sufficient to combat newer forms of digital fraud.
Calls for Stronger Countermeasures
The issue was raised in the Perak State Assembly, where officials discussed both short-term and long-term strategies to address the growing threat. Efforts are expected to focus on improving public awareness, strengthening enforcement, and enhancing collaboration between agencies to tackle increasingly complex scam operations.
The surge in online fraud cases highlights the risks that come with Malaysia’s rapid digital adoption. As more services move online, from banking to shopping, the attack surface for cybercriminals continues to expand. Stay safe and stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
