An open letter requesting that AI labs around the world pause their experiments on AI more powerful than GPT4 for 6 months has appeared. Notable individuals of the 1123 signatories to date include Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, Tesla and Twitter and Steve Wozniak, Co-founder of Apple but there’s also various other CEOs, professors, leaders and so forth.

Apparently fearing that AI will gain sentience and reach the point of singularity, the Open Letter further states “This pause should be public and verifiable, and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium.

According to the letter, during this pause AI experts should “jointly develop and implement a set of shared safety protocols for advanced AI design and development that are rigorously audited and overseen by independent outside experts”. With stories appearing of GPT4 and other AI supposedly having feelings, planning to break out and so forth, it seems like a wise move.

What do you think? Should we pause AI development for a bit to put in some more safety controls or maybe even a kill switch? Share your thoughts in the comments or you can add your signature to the letter but as always, stay tuned to TechNave.com
