
OpenAI has released new data on the rapid adoption of AI tools across Southeast Asia, including the weekly users of its generative AI chatbot, ChatGPT, in the region. These include how weekly ChatGPT users in Malaysia have increased by an impressive 330% year-over-year.
In a statement, it was revealed that OpenAI currently has over 500 million weekly active users worldwide and more than 2 million paying business customers globally. Regionally, in Southeast Asia, weekly ChatGPT users have tripled since OpenAI first established its presence in Asia.

Year-over-year growth of weekly ChatGPT users for selected Southeast Asian countries includes:
- Vietnam: 700%+
- Thailand: 700%+
- Malaysia: 330%
- Indonesia: 330% (top five market globally for weekly ChatGPT users)
- Singapore: 100%
- Philippines: 84%
Furthermore, it was revealed that people, businesses, and civic institutions across Southeast Asia are using OpenAI's advanced AI tools to solve hard problems and become more productive, creative and efficient. Across Southeast Asia, the top five use cases for ChatGPT are:
- Tutoring and teaching
- “How to” advice
- Writing and editing
- Writing fiction and creative ideation
- Translation
Younger users, particularly those aged 18-34, are driving this growth, signalling how important AI is becoming for future workforces.
Jason Kwon, the Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, lauded how quickly people across Southeast Asia are embracing AI, including developers and startups and building the future using the company’s advanced AI models. “With the upcoming ASEAN Summit emphasising digital transformation, investing in AI infrastructure today will help Southeast Asian countries better meet their citizens' needs, foster innovation, and position countries in the region as leaders in AI,” said Jason.
