OpenAI has begun testing a new ad feature on its ChatGPT platform. The move is part of the company's efforts to cover infrastructure costs and expand access to advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features for free plan users.

Other plans remain ad-free though

For your information, the test involves users registered in the United States, specifically those on the free plan and the Go subscription plan. Other paid plans, such as Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education, remain ad-free.

According to OpenAI, the ads will appear as clearly labelled sponsored placements and visually separated from regular responses to avoid confusion. The company stressed that the answers generated by ChatGPT will remain independent and uninfluenced by advertisers.

Moreover, the advertising system works by matching ads based on current conversation topics, past chat history, and previous ad interactions. However, OpenAI states that advertisers will not have access to the content of individual conversations or users' personal details.

Additionally, only aggregate performance data, such as the number of views and clicks, will be shared with third parties. As a security measure, OpenAI prohibits the display of ads on sensitive topics including health, politics and mental health. Furthermore, you are given control to turn off ads, provide feedback and manage personal settings through the account settings area.
