OpenAI has officially introduced the ChatGPT agent, a new productivity feature that automates multi-step tasks. Initially rolling out to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team subscribers, the new tool is priced at around RM200 per month, offering enhanced capabilities beyond simple conversation.

What is ChatGPT agent?

ChatGPT agent allows users to assign tasks that require multiple actions, such as researching topics, comparing prices, planning events, or generating reports. The agent uses a secure virtual computer to carry out these tasks by combining:

  • A visual and text-based web browser
  • A terminal interface
  • Code execution tools
  • Automated workflow decision-making

The system intelligently chooses which tools to use depending on the task and can navigate websites, fill in forms, execute scripts, and more—though it requires user approval before completing sensitive actions like logging into accounts or submitting payments.

How it works

This upgrade brings together OpenAI’s existing tools: Operator, Deep Research, and its core ChatGPT model. The result is an agent that can think through a task, take action using digital tools, and confirm key decisions with the user along the way.

Users can interact with the agent in natural language and assign complex workflows. For instance, it can help you collect data on your competitors, summarise documents, or even draft a presentation—handling each step with minimal user input.

Safety features and limitations

To ensure responsible use, OpenAI has implemented multiple safety controls:

  • No memory usage: The agent does not retain data between tasks by default.
  • Manual approval for sensitive tasks: The system pauses before making purchases, logging into accounts, or navigating high-risk websites.
  • Watch mode: If the user becomes inactive, the agent will pause to prevent unintended actions.
  • Restricted capabilities: Access to certain system commands and websites is blocked.

These safeguards are designed to balance automation with user oversight, especially as the technology is still evolving. OpenAI warns that this early version may occasionally be slow or encounter errors, and encourages users to monitor its actions closely.

Availability and release timeline

The ChatGPT agent began rolling out on 17 July 2025. It is currently available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, and Team users, with plans to expand to Enterprise and Education tiers in the near future.

No Malaysia-specific timeline has been announced, but users in supported regions with eligible subscriptions can expect access soon. Pricing remains consistent across markets, estimated at RM200 per month based on current exchange rates.
