OpenAI launches GPT-5.1 - A smarter, friendlier, and more understanding ChatGPT for you

OpenAI today launched GPT-5.1, an upgrade to the flagship model of the GPT-5 series introduced in August. So, what should you know about it?

Coming in two versions, Instant and Thinking, GPT-5.1 is now better at following custom instructions, using reasoning to provide more accurate answers, and overall, smoother and more fun to chat with.

A friendlier and smarter model

For your information, GPT-5.1 Instant is the most frequently used model, which is now friendlier, smarter, and better at following user instructions. Meanwhile, GPT-5.1 Thinking is an advanced reasoning model, which is now easier to understand and faster for simple tasks, and more consistent for complex tasks.

By default, GPT-5.1 will auto-match queries to the most appropriate model, so in most cases, users do not need to manually select a model. Along with improving this model, OpenAI now also makes it easier for users to customise ChatGPT's tone and style.

In addition, there are new tone settings, including Professional, Candid, and Quirky, joining existing options like Default, Nerdy, Cynical, Friendly (formerly Listener), and Efficient (formerly Robot). These personality settings apply to all models.

In the meantime, OpenAI is also testing additional personalisation controls, such as adjusting the level of friendliness and frequency of emoji use.

Availability

Moreover, GPT-5.1 Instant and Thinking are rolling out today, starting with paid users (Pro, Plus, Go, Business) before expanding to free and non-logged-in users. Meanwhile, Enterprise and Edu plans get seven days of early access (disabled by default). After that period, GPT-5.1 will become the sole default model.

Furthermore, GPT-5.1 may not be available immediately if users check ChatGPT today. OpenAI will introduce it in stages over the next few days to ensure stable performance for all users. GPT?5 Pro is also expected to be updated to GPT-5.1 Pro soon.
