Advertising in ChatGPT? This day was always going to happen, but it has not rolled out yet. Today, OpenAI has published its official approach to introducing advertising within ChatGPT. According to the company’s announcement, ads will begin rolling out as tests in the United States for users on the free and new ChatGPT Go plans, while subscribers on higher-tier paid plans will remain ad-free.
Balancing Accessibility and Trust
In its announcement, OpenAI explained that AI is reaching a point where individuals can have a “personal super-assistant” that supports learning and productivity, and that access to this capability should be broadly available. The company recently expanded ChatGPT Go to the U.S., offering messaging, image creation, file uploads and memory features at an affordable $8 USD per month (or RM38.99 per month in Malaysia).
As part of this effort, OpenAI plans to start testing ads in ChatGPT for free and Go tier users in the coming weeks. OpenAI stressed that ads will never influence the content of its responses, and that user data and conversations will remain private and will not be sold to advertisers.
Ads will appear clearly separate from organic chatbot answers, and users will be able to control personalisation settings or opt out entirely. The company also said it will not display ads to users under 18 or alongside sensitive topics such as health and politics.
Core Principles Guiding ChatGPT Advertising
OpenAI outlined several guiding principles for its advertising approach, beginning with strong alignment to its mission of ensuring that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The company said it prioritises answer independence, meaning that ads won’t shape or bias the assistant’s output, and that conversation privacy remains paramount.
Choice and control for users are central to the strategy, with options to disable personalisation and clear data used for ads at any time. Long-term value is emphasised, aiming to preserve the quality of user experience over short-term revenue gains.
Ads will initially be tested at the bottom of responses in ChatGPT when there’s a relevant sponsored product or service related to a conversation. Users will be able to learn why an ad is shown or dismiss it entirely. During the test period, OpenAI plans to collect feedback and refine how ads are presented over time, while maintaining focus on trust and user experience.
Advertising as Part of a Broader Access Strategy
OpenAI said that advertising is just one component of its broader strategy to make AI tools accessible to a wider audience without imposing steep usage limits for non-paying users. By diversifying how services are funded and ensuring ad placements are guided by clear principles, the company hopes to support its infrastructure costs while keeping the platform broadly available and trusted.
