Yup, you read the headline correctly. We aren't kidding with this latest 5G analysis report by Opensignal. It was only published yesterday and we are just as surprised as you to find out that Kuala Lumpur is in second place in terms of 5G download speed (Mbps). The charts are based on Asia Pacific Accreditation Cooperation (APAC)'s biggest cities.

As you can see from the chart below, Seoul takes the first spot with 453.1 Mbps but KL came in second as mentioned earlier at 376.6 Mbps. That said, KL got first place in terms of 5G Upload Speed with 52.8 Mbps. Compared with Seoul, it's a bit of a far cry seeing the country with 40.6 Mbps only and to make things intriguing, our neighbour Singapore scored an average of 266.3 and 24.3 Mbps for 5G download and upload speeds respectively.

According to Opensignal, KL is rocking the chart simply because of the specific market situation in Malaysia. As many of you know, only one company (YES) is riding on Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB)'s single wholesale 5G network. The soft launch began in December 2021 only a number of selected places have 5G such as KL, Putrajaya and Cyberjaya. Therefore, only some people get to enjoy 5G for now.

With this, it's only natural that Malaysians who got to experience 5G felt a huge download improvement from 4G. However, this is still the early 5G phase for Malaysians. As aforementioned by Opensignal, there is only 10.9% of the time when 5G is available which is really low in the chart, as well as scoring 2.5 rating in terms of 5G reach.
