Opensignal - Most Malaysian mobile gamers are still facing poor multiplayer mobile gaming experience in 4G networks

So Opensignal is back once again with a new report on our mobile network experience across Malaysia. Looking into the National Digital Infrastructure Lab (NDIL) report and phase 1 plans for all the 13 states and 3 federal territories, here's what we noticed on our future mobile progress.

According to the research, the majority of Malaysians are able to access into 4G LTE network which stands at 86% (average). However, this cannot be said the same to East Malaysians in Sabah and Sarawak, as well as those who are staying in Kelantan experiencing 80% or less for 4G. This is particularly an issue where rural areas are still experiencing weak 4G or just 3G signal.

That said, even though the majority of Malaysians have 4G access, playing multiplayer mobile games over cellular networks is still challenging. In case you didn't know, mobile gaming is the preferred entertainment method for us and most states have "poor" multiplayer mobile gaming experience. But for the metropolis cities like Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Putrajaya and even Pahang, most Malaysians have a "fair" experience from that activity.

The poor and fair multiplayer mobile gaming experience is further evidenced by OpenSignal when they measured the 4G download speed. Overall, the download speeds ranged from 10.5Mbps (Kedah) to 16.5Mbps (Putrajaya) whereas states like Kelantan, Sabah and Perlis' results are quite low as well. On the other hand, our 4G Video Experience is quite "good" although we would have to wait from 3 to 4.3 seconds for a video to start playing.

With all that said, this is probably one of the reasons why the NDIL is initiating the JENDELA project. As you should know, JENDELA is an initiative to help accelerate and expand 4G as much as they can to improve Malaysia's digital connectivity. As we progress towards 5G, this is an important job for the government to upgrade and strengthen the foundation before transitioning.
