Multinational networking and telecommunications company Ericsson recently released its annual mobility report which revealed several interesting findings and predictions. Among which is the estimation that over 1 billion people worldwide will be connected to 5G by the end of this year.

This is based on the network’s rapid global growth, whereby 110 million people subscribed to 5G between July and September this year alone. That made the total number of people using 5G globally to 870 million, a substantial increase from the estimated 580 million users recorded at the end of 2021.

Hence, according to Ericsson, it is likely that 5G users will break the 1 billion mark by the end of this month. Should as such happen, that would make 5G hit the nine-figure subscriber mark 2 years faster than 4G did.

Long-term, Ericsson predicts that 5G would reach 5 billion subscriptions worldwide by 2028 and make up 55 per cent of all network subscriptions. The company also emphasised the importance of 5G in advancing consumer technology.
