Over $10 billion was spent by Apple on the Project Titan car

Yesterday, we reported that Apple has officially shut down its Apple Car project. The project went on for nearly 10 years and according to The New York Times, Apple spent over a shocking $10 billion budget.

Besides spending a $10 billion budget, the media also listed some details of what Apple went through during the project development. The majority of the budget was spent on research and development as well as thousands of Apple engineers and car experts. It seems that the project was doomed from the start, as some Apple employees have called Project Titan a "Titanic disaster".

As we reported before, Apple's vision for the Apple Car was a fully automated vehicle with self-driving capabilities without a steering wheel. Several staff members knew it was impossible and that kind of technology would cost at least $100,000. All in all, Apple failed to develop the software and algorithms for autonomous driving.

We also reported years ago that Apple was in talks with Hyundai, Kia and even Toyota but they never took off. The media also said that Apple had discussions with Elon Musk to purchase Tesla but made a U-turn to manufacture its own vehicle instead. That was in 2014 and Musk confirmed that the acquisition was "very unlikely".

Now that the Apple Car project is closed, over 2000 employees will be redistributed. Reports say some will join the Apple AI team and other departments, while some will be released. If you want to full details of the project, you can visit The New York Times' report right here
