Over 14k online fraud cases, with losses exceeding RM581 million had been recorded in Malaysia since January 2024

Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal and Institution Reform) M. Kulasegaran in Parliament today revealed that a total of 14,490 online fraud cases were recorded from January to 15 June 2024. The cases amounted to losses exceeding RM581 million. 

According to Bernama, Kulasegaran asserted in a Special Chamber session that the online fraud cases involved telecommunication crimes, e-financial crimes, love scams, e-commerce crimes, and non-existent loans and investments. For comparison, a total of 25,479 cases were recorded in 2022 with losses of over RM851 million and 34,495 in 2023, with losses of over RM1 billion. 

Furthermore, the Deputy Minister revealed a total of 7,960 arrests had been made this year as of May 2024. Out of the arrests, 5,933 charges have been made in court. 

To combat scams more effectively, Kulasegaran asserted that the government plans to amend some existing laws, which are currently in the final stages of engagement. Moreover, the Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) also conducted 3,689 crime prevention programmes from January to May this year to raise awareness.
