Scam cases have been on the rise lately. Thankfully, the MCMC has also been very active in countering this problem. According to a minister, the government body has blocked over 3150 scam-related media online.

According to YB Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister for the Digital and Communication Department, over 3150 scams and phishing content have been blocked over this year. That includes 1471 websites, 2,871 Facebook posts, 254 WhatsApp messages, 13 Instagram posts, 11 Telegram messages, and a TikTok video. She also said:

"MCMC may have limited powers to investigate fraud cases, but it has the authority to delete or take down any fraudulent content when it receives information from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). MCMC will always work closely with PDRM to ensure that we can provide immediate assistance to fraud victims.”

This was a response to Dr Wan Azizah, who inquired about the law enforcement measures to counter cyber threats. As a result, the Communications and Digital Ministry, through the Personal Data Protection Department, might amend the Personal Data Protection Act 2010.

Since this phenomenon does not look like it's stopping soon, we advise everyone to be careful when going online. Never click on suspicious links, texts or emails requesting your personal details. If it’s too good to be true, the chances are, it’s not.
