The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has revealed that online fraud cases in Malaysia have caused losses exceeding RM19 million from 1 January to 24 March this year. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) acting director Datuk Rohaimi Md Isa added that online fraud cases have also risen by 36.9% compared with the same period last year.
Rohaimi was quoted by Bernama as saying that 2,328 cases were recorded so far this year. For context, during the same period in 2024, 1,700 cases were reported, resulting in losses amounting to RM13.66 million.
PDRM thus advises consumers, especially during this festive season to remain vigilant when making purchases online. The CCID acting director urged the public to be cautious of deals which seem too good to be true, and to conduct transactions only through secure and reputable e-commerce platforms.
Additionally, Rohaimi emphasised the importance of checking reviews and feedback from other buyers and verifying the seller’s account number and phone number through the Semak Mule (https://semakmule.rmp.gov.my/) portal, before making any payments.
