PDRM will take legal action against e-scooters on the roads starting on 1 January 2021

Sometimes the government organisations make decisions we don't agree with, especially when it comes to aspects like transportation. The bad news this time is that e-scooters will no longer be allowed on the roads and those who do not comply could face legal action.

According to The Malay Mail, this regulation will be in effect starting from 1 January 2021. The reason behind the decision was due to the many complaints that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has received about e-scooter users on the road. Currently, you'll still be able to ride your e-scooter as usual. But once the regulation is in place, offenders could be fine RM300 (and up to RM1000 for repeated offences) or be jailed up to 3 months.

Fortunately, it's not a complete ban of e-scooters. You will still ride in areas that are permitted, such as playgrounds or around shopping centres. On top of that, you can ride on the road if you apply for a special license from the Road Transport Department (JPJ). Of course, this does imply that we would have to pay for a license fee and possibly a road tax.

This news is quite disappointing for many, as e-scooters have become a popular choice for travelling ultra-short distances. Having said that, what are your thoughts about it? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave for more updates on this.
