PLUS launches a Toll Payment System using plate number recognition and free lanes

Looks like PLUS users are in for a treat. Recently, PLUS announced the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) - based Open Toll Payment System, which is being implemented as a pilot project for private vehicles on the Hutan Kampung-Sungai Dua stretch. So, what should you know about it?

For your information, this initiative marks a significant milestone and an initial step towards the implementation of the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system on Malaysian highways.

Through this initiative, registered users are no longer tied to a specific dedicated lane. Instead, users can enter and exit through any of the toll lanes at the following nine toll plazas:

  • Hutan Kampung
  • Alor Setar North
  • Alor Setar South
  • Pendang
  • Gurun
  • North Sungai Petani
  • South Sungai Petani
  • Bertam
  • Sungai Dua

ANPR cameras installed at toll plazas will detect vehicle plate numbers to allow toll charges to be processed automatically through a payment platform linked to the user's preferred payment method. This artificial intelligence (AI)-powered system is designed to identify vehicles in a variety of conditions, including weather, speed, viewing angles and non-standard license plates, and will continue to improve its accuracy over time.

How to use the ANPR open toll payment system

You will need to download the JustGo Malaysia app, register their vehicle and link their preferred payment methods, such as debit or credit card. Additional payment methods such as e-wallets and online banking will be introduced in the near future.

When passing through the involved toll plaza, simply drive as normal and use any lane, with payments processed automatically on the JustGO Malaysia app without the need for any additional devices.

Apart from toll payment, the JustGo Malaysia application also provides e-invoice facilities to make things easier for users.

Throughout the implementation period of the pilot project, toll barriers will remain in use. Users are also advised to maintain a speed of between 20 and 25km/h when passing through the toll plaza without having to stop.

Existing toll payment methods

For now, the ANPR open toll payment system at the nine participating toll plazas is only being introduced as an additional option. Existing toll payment methods, such as Touch 'n Go, SmartTAG, and RFID, can still be used as usual.
