Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has revealed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has asked Sarawak to supply electricity to the Philippines. Specifically, Anwar requested Sarawak to supply its excess electricity to Souther Philippines via Sabah starting in 2026.

Bernama quoted Abang Johari as saying that the electricity will be generated from a 500-megawatt (MW) combined cycle gas turbine power plant in Miri, along with three other plants with a combined capacity of 1,500 MW in Bintulu. He added that the Prime Minister’s request means that Sarawak are supplying energy within ASEAN, which shows the state’s strength.

The Sarawak Premier also revealed that the state is in the process of producing more synthetic gas as a source of energy generation. He thus lauded Sarwak as a major energy producer in ASEAN and contributing to the ASEAN energy grid.
