Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim has denied claims that the basic electricity tariff in Peninsular Malaysia will increase by 14% this July. So, what should you know about it?
However, he said electricity tariffs were expected to be increased in the second half of this year, with rates to be set after a later review. Anwar explained that the decision needs to be made based on capacity and prices at a certain period. He said:
On the issue of Imbalance in Fuel Cost Transfer (ICPT), the electricity transfer rate is not 14%. No! The review every six months is based on current prices. Therefore, I do not think it will be too burdensome or detrimental to the community. However, it is certainly not as it is said. This is why I just checked with Tengku Zafrul in case I am wrong about the facts.
Previously, Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) proposed that the new tariff schedule in Peninsular Malaysia would increase by 14.2% to 45.62 sen/kWh for the period 2025 to 2027. However, Energy Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah on December 27 announced that no decision had been made regarding the increase in electricity tariffs. Returning to context, this upward adjustment from the current rate of 39.95 sen/kWh is the result of the review carried out on the future regulatory framework for the power sector.
