Recently, a report from the Thai-based publication The Nation which claimed that Tesla is cancelling its plans to open a factory in Southeast Asian countries and Asia has caught global attention, including in Malaysia. Now, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has revealed information he received from the company on this decision.

Speaking to reporters after launching the Guidelines on the Management and Governance of Federal Statutory Bodies in Kuala Lumpur on 9 August, Anwar said that Tesla is currently suffering losses and can’t compete with EV manufacturers from China. He added that this information was received directly from Tesla and not from any news outlets.

Besides that, the Prime Minister said that this doesn’t affect Malaysia as the EV market in our country is still relatively new compared to the large Tesla operation in Thailand.

Previously, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul clarified that Tesla never made any commitments to build a factory here, so this doesn’t really affect our country. For context, Tesla only agreed to build its supercharger network and open its headquarters in our country. Beyond that, its sister company Starlink also started operating in Malaysia.
