Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim revealed that Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB)'s digital systems were recently attacked by hackers demanding a USD10 million ransom. So, what should you know about it?

He said the government, however, would not bow to the threat, stating the need to improve the national system with additional funds for several agencies including the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) and Bank Negara Malaysia.

"Yesterday we talked about cyber attacks and hacking and it was quite severe against MAHB. So the discussion on how to resolve it, including the demands from the hackers to obtain US$10 million or so, was informed.

"I didn't wait five seconds. I immediately answered "No". There is no way this country will be safe if its leadership and system allow us to bow to the ultimatum of criminals and treason," he said at the 218th Police Day Celebration at the Police Training Centre.

Additionally, the Prime Minister, however, did not provide further details about the cyber attack on the MAHB system. In conjunction with the Police Day celebration, Anwar hopes that PDRM will increase the strength of its forces, including being more assertive on corruption issues and governance and not giving in to any party that makes threats.

"I am confident that when it comes to combating corruption and governance if enforcement agencies such as the Royal Malaysian Police and others are firm and tough for a year or two, do not compromise at all, do not care about their rank and influence, take strict action... I am confident that the political atmosphere and climate of this country will be much better," he said.

Also present at the celebration were Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and his Deputy Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, as well as Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Also present were Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain and Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
