PlayStation Plus Premium is currently priced at USD 160 per year (about RM720), but fans fear another round of price hikes may be on the way. The concern follows comments from PlayStation executives and recent subscription trends.
Sony’s PlayStation Plus service offers three tiers—Essential, Extra, and Premium. While the Premium tier offers cloud streaming, classic games, and early access features, its cost has become a talking point.
This is especially true after previous price adjustments across several regions, including parts of Asia.
Sony hints at possible future adjustments
In a recent interview celebrating the 15th anniversary of PlayStation Plus, Nick Maguire, PlayStation’s Vice President of Global Services, confirmed that the company raised prices in some markets earlier this year, including Australia and countries across Asia. Maguire explained that as more players upgrade to higher tiers, price adjustments may follow to reflect added value.
According to Maguire, around 18 percent of users have upgraded from Essential to Extra or Premium over the past year. The company believes these upper-tier plans offer better long-term value, especially with access to large back catalogs of PS4, PS5, and classic titles.
However, the company also noted that it has no intention of mimicking Xbox Game Pass by offering first-party games on day one through the service. This further differentiates PlayStation’s approach to subscription-based gaming.
Gamers voice frustration online
On social media and forums like Reddit, some subscribers have begun voicing concerns about rising costs and inconsistent value across regions.
One user posted:
“Well, after ANOTHER price hike in such a short time, I canceled.”
Another added:
“The price goes up and the quality goes down—it’s really that simple.”
These sentiments reflect a growing tension between Sony’s pricing strategy and user expectations, especially in countries like Malaysia, where subscription fees can quickly add up after currency conversion.
Our thoughts
Sony’s strategy appears focused on encouraging users to move up the tier ladder, with the Extra and Premium plans driving most of the growth. But frequent price increases without corresponding improvements in content or features could lead to more cancellations in the long term.
The risk is especially real in emerging markets like Malaysia, where gamers are more price-sensitive. If the service becomes too expensive compared to the value it delivers, users may consider switching to alternatives like Xbox Game Pass, which offers better perks in certain regions.
