Sony has officially confirmed that PlayStation 5 shipments have reached 80.3 million units worldwide as of 30 June 2025.

The console, which initially launched in late 2020 with a starting price of USD499 (approximately RM2320 at launch), continues to maintain solid global momentum nearly five years into its lifecycle.

What happened

According to Sony’s latest financial report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2025, 2.5 million PS5 units were shipped between April and June 2025 alone.

This brings the total cumulative shipments to 80.3 million units, putting the PS5 within reach of the PlayStation 3’s lifetime sales, which ended at around 87.4 million units.

Although it still trails behind the PlayStation 4, which had shipped approximately 82.4 million units within a similar post-launch period, the PS5 has shown strong and steady performance.

What we could expect

Analysts suggest that even if total unit sales fall short of the PS4, the PlayStation 5 is generating greater revenue from digital content, accessories, and services, which contribute to a more profitable ecosystem overall.

Sony’s continued rollout of exclusive titles, improvements in supply chain logistics, and the introduction of refreshed hardware such as the PS5 Slim and upcoming PS5 Pro are also seen as factors sustaining consumer interest and long-term sales.

Will the PlayStation 5 eventually surpass the PlayStation 4, or is Sony betting on software and services for the win this generation? Either way, the 80.3 million mark is a strong signal that the PS5 is far from slowing down.
