For many poor families, pursuing higher education may feel like a luxury. However, the Malaysian government is aiming to help such families with new initiatives for 2026. This would be done through aid from the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN).

RM120 million annual allocation

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that PTPTN will provide 5800 students from low-income families with financial aid. These students can use the funds to pursue studies at public universities (IPTA). Moreover, the new initiative will involve an annual allocation of RM120 million for families earning less than RM2705.

The PM suggested that this initiative could be expanded further, depending on the country's financial capacity. This means a higher annual allocation, as long as our nation's finances can support it. Besides that, the government will add 1500 more spots for undergraduates at five research universities across 10 fields of study. These fields will include law, accounting, economics, banking, Islamic finance, artificial intelligence (AI) and languages.

Equal reward and punishment

The government will also allow exemptions to PTPTN loan repayments for an estimated 6000 borrowers from low or middle-income families, provided the student graduates with first-class honours degrees from an IPTA. However, travel restrictions will be imposed on those who are able but refuse to repay their loans.

We expect to hear more details on the new initiative soon. Until then, stay tuned to TechNave for more local news like this.
