Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow has revealed that the Penang State Government is expanding CCTV coverage across Seberang Perai with the installation of up to 1,000 CCTV units. This move is meant to boost security and uphold the state’s status as Malaysia’s safest city.

Bernama quoted Chow as saying that efforts are underway to increase CCTV coverage across the Penang mainland. However, the State Government’s resources are limited, hence, it can only add up to 1,000 units within the next 1 or 2 years.

The Penang Chief Minister added that currently, there are over 200 CCTVs in Seberang Perai. In comparison, there are over 1,000 CCTVs on Penang Island.

Chow also referenced Numbeo’s 2025 Crime Index, which revealed that Penang has a crime index score of 30.3 and a safety index of 69.7. This makes Penang the safest state in Malaysia.
