
Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) will launch its first affordable electric vehicle (EV) that meets national needs at the end of this month, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Perodua EV launch is a part of the National Agenda
For your information, Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said the launch of the fully Malaysian-made Perodua EV would be made a part of the National Agenda.
"The EV that will be launched is affordable, meets national needs and can generate the (national) economy," he said when speaking at a visit and friendly program with Perodua employees here today.
In addition, the Prime Minister said the launch of the car also reflected the strength of research and development (R&D) and the expertise of the local workforce. "The launch of this EV proves that the automotive company not only has a good research and development team, but is also very disciplined in terms of management and good governance.
"Therefore, the MADANI Government and the Malaysian people will give full support to Perodua," said Anwar. Earlier, Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, in his speech, said that throughout its 32 years of operation, Perodua has produced 5.5 million vehicle units.
"We have also invested a total of RM13.4 billion since 1993, and at the same time, Perodua is also preparing to face and overcome future challenges and invest in EV models," he said.
In May this year, Perodua reportedly said that initially, 30 per cent of the first EV assembly would be done at its new factory in Rawang and would be priced below RM80,000.
According to the company, with an expected monthly production of 500 units, the EV is targeted at young buyers and small families to enable them to own an affordable electric vehicle.
