Police officers in Malaysia will gradually wear body cameras starting October 2024

The Home Ministry has revealed that it has procured a total of 7,648 body worn cameras (BWCs) for the Royal Malaysia Police’s (PDRM) use. Accordingly, Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) director Datuk Wan Hassan Wan Ahmad has revealed further details on the BWCs’ usage, which you can read on to find out more. 

Taking to Facebook, the Home Ministry revealed that it has handed over the letter of agreement (LOA) for the supply, procurement, electrical wiring data cabling services, software configuration equipment installation and training for the 7,648 BWCs. The company awarded the tender is Mindwave Consultancy Sdn Bhd under a 2-year contract. 

Meanwhile, the JPJKK director told Berita Harian that the BWCs will be used by PDRM’s mobile patrol vehicle unit (MPV) and motorcycle patrol unit (URB) under the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT). He added that the BWCs will be placed at 157 district police headquarters (IPD) and 640 police stations at all contingents.

Moreover, Wan Hassan revealed that the BWCs will be used in stages starting in October 2024. They will be fully utilised by March 2025.
