Pos Malaysia is embarking on a pilot project to integrate autonomous vehicles into its operations, with the goal of boosting productivity and operational efficiency in handling postal items, particularly within internal facility operations. The initiative marks one of the first uses of autonomous driving technology in Malaysia’s postal sector and signals a step toward modernising the service in line with current technological advancements.
Government and Partners Back Proof of Concept Trial
Speaking at the launch event in Shah Alam, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the autonomous vehicle project will be implemented as a proof of concept (POC) at the National Mail Centre, with testing expected to run for three to six months while awaiting final approval from the Ministry of Transport. The objective is to explore potential uses of autonomous systems in mail logistics before broader deployment.
The project has drawn support across government agencies and strategic partners, including the Ministry of Communications, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, MIMOS, and Digital Nasional Berhad, reflecting a collaborative effort to bring emerging technologies into traditional service sectors.
Focus on Intermediate Routes and Digital Infrastructure

During the press briefing, Fahmi explained that the first phase of deployment will focus on intermediate routes, such as transporting mail between the National Mail Centre and major post offices, rather than direct doorstep delivery. The success of this trial will rely on adequate digital infrastructure, including robust 5G coverage, which aligns with broader government plans to develop a national digital infrastructure policy that supports future-ready technologies.
Assurances on Jobs and Worker Welfare
The Communications Minister also addressed concerns about job displacement, affirming that the adoption of autonomous vehicles will not lead to job losses. Instead, the initiative will be paired with retraining and upskilling efforts to prepare workers for more complex roles as technology reshapes operational demands. Fahmi stressed that automation and artificial intelligence should not be used as justification for large-scale layoffs, emphasising the importance of protecting workers’ welfare throughout the technology transition.
Continued Support for Universal Service Obligations

To support Pos Malaysia’s broader service commitments, the Ministry of Communications has allocated RM50 million to aid the postal service in fulfilling its Universal Service Obligation (USO), particularly for mail delivery nationwide. This funding will be disbursed once the Postal Services Fund is established, expected by the third quarter of 2026, under the supervision of the ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
