The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) will be fully enforcing the new set of guidelines on registration of prepaid public cellular services by 1 January 2018.

Initially introduced on the 1 June 2017 this year, the new guidelines are designed to protect consumer’s data from being misused for criminal purposes and an overall better experience by eradicating the misuse of prepaid public cellular devices for crime and terrorism.

The new guidelines work in a way that all service providers and consumers, Malaysian or non-Malaysian, will have to provide utility bills or proof of stay during their registration of a new number. Consumers will also have a new limit of only five SIM cards per service provider per user.
