Following PH-Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah's proposal to make it mandatory to re-inspect vehicles aged 15 years and above before renewing their road tax in the Dewan Rakyat the other day, PAS Information Chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari stated via Malaysia Gazette that the proposal was deemed unfounded. So, what should you know about it?

In a statement made via the social media site Facebook, Fadhli, who is also the Member of Parliament for Pasir Mas, stated that the government has never released data on the percentage of accidents involving vehicles aged 15 years and above to make the inspection mandatory.

He also stressed that the proposal would only burden the people. "I hope the government does not implement the proposal from the Government MP. Coincidentally, it was proposed after PUSPAKOM had a competitor which was announced by the government itself. Of course, there is work, there is profit…," he added.

In a proposal mentioned in the Dewan Rakyat last week, Puah said the move to make the inspection mandatory was important because older cars have a higher potential to break down, causing road congestion and endangering other road users.

He also suggested that the government provide cash incentives to encourage owners to dispose of old cars, describing the measure as an effective way to dispose of old cars on the road.

Puah also revealed that the number of vehicles in Malaysia has now exceeded 36.6 million, or has surpassed the total population, excluding children under 17 years of age and senior citizens 80 years of age and above. “This means that almost all Malaysians own two cars,” he said
