Proton has officially launched Lumo, a new privacy?centric AI assistant, with the Lumo Plus plan priced at USD12.99 per month (approximately RM59). The tool is now accessible on web browsers and mobile apps, offering both free and paid tiers for users in Malaysia and worldwide.
Lumo is designed to provide useful AI functions such as summarising documents, generating code, drafting emails, and more—while maintaining strict user privacy.
Proton emphasises that it does not store conversations or use user data for training its AI models.
Proton Lumo: A Privacy-first alternative
Unlike mainstream AI platforms, Lumo prioritises user control and data protection. All chats are protected with zero-access encryption, meaning only the user can access their data—not even Proton can read it.
Communication between devices and Proton’s servers is secured with Transport Layer Security (TLS) and additional layers of encryption.
By default, Lumo’s web search function is disabled to preserve user anonymity. However, users can choose to activate it if needed. When enabled, it relies on privacy?respecting search engines.
Users can also upload files—such as PDFs or Word documents—for analysis. These files are processed without being stored or reused.
Lumo is powered by a mix of open?source large language models, including Mistral’s Mixtral, Mistral Small, Nvidia’s OpenHands 32B, and the Allen Institute’s OLMo 2 32B.
Tasks are dynamically routed to the model best suited for the request, such as using OpenHands for code-related queries.
Features and plans
Lumo is available in both free and paid versions. Guest users can ask up to 25 questions per week without signing up.
Creating a Proton account increases the limit to 100 requests weekly and enables encrypted chat history and favourites. For heavy users, Lumo Plus unlocks:
- Unlimited interactions
- Extended encrypted history
- Support for file uploads
- More advanced prompts
- The Lumo Plus plan is priced at USD12.99 per month (around RM59) or USD119.88 per year (around RM547).
Notable features of Lumo AI
Here is a breakdown of key features offered by Proton’s Lumo:
- Zero?access encryption: Only users can access their chat data.
- No data logging: Conversations are not stored or used to train AI.
- Ghost mode: Conversations are deleted immediately after the session ends.
- Optional web search: Disabled by default but can be turned on.
- File uploads: Analyse PDFs, DOCX, and other formats with no data retention.
- Proton Drive integration: Securely share and analyse cloud files from Proton’s ecosystem.
Platform availability
Lumo is accessible via:
- Web: Available at lumo.proton.me
- Mobile apps: Available on both Android and iOS
- No Proton account is required to get started, making it easy to test the assistant before committing to a paid plan.
What it means for Malaysia
From a Malaysian perspective, Lumo could be especially appealing to users concerned about data privacy. While many AI platforms prioritise performance, Lumo focuses on giving users more control.
Proton has already built a reputation with its email and cloud services, and Lumo seems to extend that privacy-first approach into the AI space.
Its pricing is transparent and competitive, and its reliance on open?source models and European data infrastructure may attract privacy-conscious individuals and professionals who prefer secure alternatives to mainstream AI providers.
Would you consider switching to a privacy-focused AI assistant like Lumo? Or is mainstream convenience still your priority?
