Last night, Proton officially opened bookings in Malaysia for the e.MAS 7 PHEV, marking the company’s first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle available for order. The announcement follows a 25-hour livestream drive covering more than 1100 km from Penang to Johor Bahru and back to the Proton Centre of Excellence via the North–South Expressway as a demonstration of the PHEV’s real-world durability and long-distance capability.

What the Test Drive Showed

The extended livestream test served to demonstrate the e.MAS 7 PHEV’s ability to handle long-distance travel without compromising everyday usability. Proton included rotating hosts, product specialists, tech and motoring content creators in the broadcast to offer live insights, impressions, and Q&A sessions throughout the journey. According to the automaker, the same dual-powered SUV completed the entire route without the need to refuel or recharge, reinforcing confidence in the vehicle’s range and engineering for local conditions.

Proton is positioning the e.MAS 7 PHEV as a dual-powered EV built for Malaysian driving conditions, blending electric-first driving with hybrid flexibility. During the drive, Proton showcased intelligent energy management and automatic switching between EV and hybrid modes to suit varying road situations. Proton says the hybrid system uses an 11-in-1 dedicated hybrid transmission and a lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) battery to balance efficiency with performance.

Proton emphasised that the e.MAS 7 PHEV’s blend of electric-first comfort, advanced connectivity, ADAS safety features, and refined interior comfort will cater to a broad range of driving needs, from daily urban commutes to weekend leisure trips. The system’s seamless transition between electric and petrol power aims to provide both emissions-free driving where possible and greater peace of mind on long-distance journeys.

Recapping the Specifications

Under the hood, the e.MAS 7 PHEV blends a 1.5-litre BHE15PFI four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an 11-in-1 dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT) and electric motor for a combined output of 262PS and 262Nm of torque. The gasoline unit itself produces about 98hp and 125Nm, while the electric motor contributes roughly 215hp and 262Nm of traction, resulting in strong hybrid performance and a 0-100km/h sprint in around eight seconds with a top speed of 170km/h on all variants.

Proton is offering two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery sizes for the e.MAS 7 PHEV. The Prime and Premium variants are equipped with an 18.4 kWh battery, providing up to 83km of pure electric range on the WLTP cycle and around 943 km combined range with the petrol engine. The Premium Plus variant uses a larger 29.8kWh Aegis Short Blade battery, which boosts EV range to about 146km (WLTP) and the total combined driving range to nearly 996 km (WLTP). Both battery options support AC charging at 6.6kW, while DC high-speed charging speeds vary by variant up to 60kW on the largest pack.

The e.MAS 7 PHEV sits in the compact SUV segment with a length of around 4740mm, a width of 1940mm and a height of 1685mm, riding on a 2755mm wheelbase. Cargo volume is generous with 528 litres of boot space, expandable to 2065 litres when rear seats are folded. Charging times are competitive for a PHEV, and the vehicle supports V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) and V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) power transfer for external device charging or powering other EVs.

Inside, the e.MAS 7 PHEV mirrors the tech seen in its electric sibling with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster and a large 15.4-inch central infotainment touchscreen running Proton’s Flyme Auto OS. The system supports both wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus Proton’s live charging map integration. Safety and driver-assistance tech includes a suite of ADAS features, surround-view cameras and multiple airbags, with higher trim levels gaining more advanced systems such as 360° cameras and extra collision warnings for enhanced protection.
