Today, Proton's first electric vehicle (EV) production plant was officially opened by Prime Minister YAB Dato' Seri Anwar Bin Ibrahim. So, what should you know about it?
A new milestone for Proton
For your information, Malaysia's first EV factory, located in Tanjung Malim, Perak, will operate with full-scale production this September, starting with the Proton e.MAS 7 model and followed by the Proton e.MAS 5, an affordable EV that is being promoted through a nationwide tour.
In addition, the factory uses Global Modular Architecture (GMA), with a base capacity of 20,000 units per year, which can be increased to 45000 units per year based on local and export demand.
Moreover, the flexible design of the factory allows for the production of a variety of models, with digital systems such as Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Warehouse Management System (WMS) already installed to support future expansion.
Notable achievements and progress so far
Among the major successes achieved by this factory was the Machine Try Out (MTO) trial to test the first car body, ensuring the readiness of the equipment before launch.
Furthermore, PROTON is training more than 30 technical and operational workers by September, with the target of creating 200 new jobs in the EV industry.
In fact, PROTON also collaborated with Sultan Azlan Shah Polytechnic (PSAS) by providing technical syllabus input and supporting practical training initiatives.
Unlike internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle factories, this new facility has dedicated zones for battery assembly, high-voltage safety, and electrical testing.
With technical support and international training from Geely, the plant was developed to global standards, thus strengthening Malaysia's position as a major player in the regional EV landscape.
