Chinese car giant Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co. Ltd (Geely) has recently launched a batch of satellites to orbit Earth that are designed to connect the next generation of fully autonomous cars. The satellites may also potentially be used for any future autonomous cars by Malaysian national car Proton as Geely holds a 49.9 percent stake in the company.

As reported by Drive, the satellites are operated by Geespace, Geely’s aerospace subsidiary. Moreover, the first 9 satellites have come online in low orbit around the planet.

Geely are also planning to launch 72 satellites by 2025, which itself is part of a grand plan of 240 satellites in the near future. The company asserted in a statement that the satellites will "provide centimetre accurate precise positioning and connectivity support” for “automotive brands in the Geely Holding portfolio". Furthermore, they will also "connect vehicles with vehicles and infrastructure with vehicles to realise true autonomous driving."

However, Geely didn’t specify which car brand would use the satellites for autonomous driving, though it is likely that all of the brands under the company would benefit from the infrastructure. Among the car brands under the company include Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Geely, Lynk & CO, Geometry, Zeekr, Smart and of course, Proton.

So, what do you guys think of this latest development by Geely? Do you think we’d be seeing fully autonomous Proton cars on the road in the near future?
