For many of us, mobile devices are great as we can use them to watch videos anywhere. YouTube and Netflix are among the most popular, but some devices don't fully support the features of these platforms like AV1 support. But it looks like Qualcomm could solve this soon.

According to Protocol Entertainment (via GSMArena), Qualcomm is working on a mobile chipset (SM8550) that could launch at the end of 2022. This chipset will come with a new Adreno GPU that will offer native AV1 decoding. For reference, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1's model number is SM8450. Based on the given info, it's safe to assume that this new chipset is most likely the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Why use the AV1 codec? Well, it's said that the AV1 codec can deliver up to 30% more efficiency than the HEVC (H.265) codec. In turn, HEVC is about 50% more efficient than the older AVC (H.264) codec. Anyway, greater efficiency means that online videos would consume fewer data. This is great for people who like to binge Netflix videos on a mobile data connection.

Of course, we're far from the end of 2022, so it's too early to speculate the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2's features. Having said that, what features would you like to see Qualcomm include? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
