How do we know companies want to push for 5G usage? When 5G becomes available to all and sundry, and when more people have the incentive to use 5G instead of 4G. That's what Qualcomm is aiming for with the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2.

Yesterday, Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2, a chipset intended for entry-level devices. Manufactured on a 4nm node process, it's a notable leap over its 6nm predecessor. The CPU is still a 2x Cortex-A78 and 6x Cortex-A55 configuration. But at their respective 2.2GHz and 2GHz, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 is 10% faster than the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1. The performance of phones equipped with it should be significantly better, but we won't know until benchmarks appear.

Besides the CPU, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 also has a new unnamed Adreno GPU. It also supports LPDDR5X RAM at 3200MHz (vs LPDDR4X at 2133MHz), UFS 3.1 storage, and improved 5G performance with the Snapdragon X61 5G modem. As for features, it uses Dual ISP instead of Triple ISP and supports different camera configurations. The new chipset also has a Multi-Camera Temporal Filtering (MCTF) format, electronic image stabilisation support, and faster autofocus.

With all these improvements, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 performs on par with some current mid-range chipsets. As such, we can expect to see better budget smartphones soon. Until then, stay tuned to TechNave for more updates.
