With 5G technology picking back up its feet to the tech world, Qualcomm was secretly working on a new chipset all this while. Introducing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G chipset, it will be the first 600-series that is integrated with 5G technology.

In terms of features, the chipset is equipped with the 5th-Gen Qualcomm AI Engine and uses a new Hexagon Tensor Accelerator. What this means is that it has the ability to make real-time transitions more smooth, like when zooming in between ultrawide and normal camera mode, or camera filters on certain apps. The chipset can also support 4K HDR video recording as well as supporting displays that have up to 120Hz refresh rate.

As for the 5G speed, the SD 690 chipset features a Qualcomm FastConnect 6200 (2x2 WiFi) and a Qualcomm Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF which supports SA, NSA and sub-6GHz global 5G frequency bands. For comparison with the SD 675 chipset, it is 20% faster and 60% faster in graphics performance that's quite good. Do note that the aforementioned 5G frequency bands are usually only seen on the 700 and 800-series 5G chipsets.

According to Qualcomm, only a few OEMs will start using the Snapdragon 690 5G chipset which includes HMD Global, Motorola, LG Electronics, SHARP, TCL and Wingtech. The company also expects to see the chipset rolling out in the second half of the year, so expect to see more smartphone brands trying to get their hands on this soon.
