If Meta is to make its metaverse dreams a universe, its Meta Quest headsets need to improve more. That could be possible with new chipsets Qualcomm announced recently - the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 and Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1. Here's a quick summary of the two chipsets.

Qualcomm has announced that the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 will debut on Meta devices this year. Specifically, it will be equipped with the Meta Quest 3 headset. On the other hand, the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 will feature on the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Other companies also expect to produce devices featuring these two chipsets in 2024.

In terms of performance, the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 promises 2.5x higher GPU performance and 8x improved AI performance than its predecessor. It'll also support up to 10 cameras and sensors, two 3K displays, and the latest Spectra ISP. As for the Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1, it's designed for lightweight smart glasses like the aforementioned Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. These devices would work well for recording, live-streaming, visual searching, and real-time translation.

Not much else was revealed, but Hugo Swart (Qualcomm VP and GM of XR) commented on how the chipsets will unlock "premium, all-in-one XR devices and smart glasses that are affordable". In other words, these devices might be compact and won't need external batteries. They could also be cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro, allowing brands to compete with the high-end product in the budget category.
