After our last report of the alleged Xbox portable gaming console delay, we got a surprise announcement of the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X. It was officially unveiled before the Xbox Games Showcase livestream, and here's everything you need to know.
What is the ROG Xbox Ally series?
Months ago, rumours began to circulate about Microsoft developing a portable PC gaming handheld console, and it was rumoured to be in talks with ASUS. Now that is official, ASUS ROG has been collaborating with Xbox to showcase these new models with improved ergonomics, cutting-edge performance and an Xbox experience in a single portable form factor.
Design and features
The ROG Xbox Ally series features a completely redesigned chassis, drawing inspiration from the Xbox controller with refined palm rests, improved grip textures and impulse triggers for deeper haptic feedback in supported titles. ASUS says the new design addresses years of community feedback.
Coming with an optimised version of the Xbox interface layered on Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally series offers a full-screen Xbox experience with quick access via Game Bar and full compatibility with Windows games and mods. The standard model is powered by the AMD Ryzen Z2 A Processor, while the flagship Ally X features the new AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme Processor.

In terms of battery life, AMD said the Ryzen Z2 series is efficient than the previous generation with an 80Wh battery and low-wattage design, aiming to deliver longer gaming sessions without sacrificing speed or graphical fidelity. Other features remain the same, such as the 7-inch FHD IPS 120Hz touchscreen, 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM, 1TB SSD and a plethora of I/O ports.
Global Launch This Holiday Season
The ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X are set to launch globally during the 2025 holiday season in more than 30 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, Germany, France, Canada and many more. Wider availability in additional regions will follow, including the Malaysian market, so expect an announcement by the end of December 2025.
