In another breaking news, Radio Televisyen Malaysia will officially stop broadcasting its channels on Astro Malaysia Holdings beginning 1 July 2026, marking the end of a partnership that has lasted for almost three decades. The move will affect RTM channels, including TV1 HD, TV2 HD, and Okey on Astro’s satellite and OTT platforms.

Rising Costs Reportedly Behind the Decision

According to reports, RTM decided to terminate the arrangement after both parties failed to reach a new pricing agreement. The broadcaster reportedly cited increasing channel rental costs and growing financial burdens tied to maintaining distribution on Astro’s platform.

RTM stated that continuing the partnership had become financially difficult as operational costs continued rising. The collaboration between RTM and Astro dates back to 1996 for TV1 and TV2, while Okey joined Astro’s platform in 2009 under its previous branding.

Major Shift for Malaysian TV Landscape

For many Malaysians, RTM channels have long been part of Astro’s standard channel lineup, making the separation notable for long-time subscribers accustomed to accessing free-to-air channels directly through Astro decoders. The announcement also arrives shortly after Astro confirmed it would no longer be the primary broadcaster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Malaysia after losing the rights to RTM and Unifi TV.

RTMKlik Expected to Become More Important

With RTM shifting focus toward its own digital platforms, the broadcaster is expected to place even greater emphasis on RTMKlik moving forward. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil recently encouraged Malaysians to install the RTMKlik app ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup broadcasts, highlighting the government’s increasing push toward digital streaming distribution. RTMKlik has steadily expanded over recent years, adding live TV streaming, on-demand content, sports programming, and broader international accessibility as part of RTM’s digital transformation efforts.

For Astro customers, the removal of RTM channels means viewers may need to access RTM programming through alternative methods including MYTV, direct terrestrial broadcasts, RTMKlik, or smart TV streaming apps, after July 2026. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
