Commuters in Malaysia faced another difficult morning today after a train on the Rapid KL Kelana Jaya Line reportedly became stuck at Kelana Jaya station due to a technical fault. The disruption affected peak-hour travel on 18 May 2026, with Rapid KL activating alternative train routes, shuttle train services, and free shuttle buses to reduce congestion.

According to Rapid KL and local reports, the affected train could not move from the Kelana Jaya station after experiencing a component issue. This caused delays across several stations on the Kelana Jaya Line, with passengers experiencing longer waiting times and crowded platforms.

Alternative train routes and shuttle services activated

To manage the disruption, Rapid KL temporarily adjusted train operations on the line. Trains from Gombak were turned back at Taman Jaya station, while trains from Putra Heights only travelled up to Ara Damansara station. Both temporary services reportedly operated at six-minute intervals.

Rapid KL also introduced shuttle train services between Ara Damansara and Kelana Jaya stations, as well as between Kelana Jaya and Taman Jaya stations. In addition, free shuttle buses were deployed between affected stations to help commuters continue their journeys.

The operator also advised passengers to consider alternative rail routes such as the Kajang Line, Ampang and Sri Petaling Line, Putrajaya Line, and Monorail Line while repair works were ongoing. Entry control and crowd management measures were implemented at several stations as a precaution.

Kelana Jaya Line continues to face technical issues

This latest disruption adds to a growing list of technical problems affecting the Kelana Jaya Line in recent months. Earlier incidents in 2026 reportedly included signalling issues between Gombak and KLCC, track switch faults near Universiti station, and several trains being temporarily removed from service due to technical problems.

The recurring disruptions have also sparked discussions online, with some commuters expressing concerns about reliability and maintenance on one of Kuala Lumpur’s busiest urban rail lines. Social media posts shared during the disruption also showed crowded stations and long queues during peak hours.

Rapid KL says repair works are ongoing

Rapid KL said its technical teams were deployed immediately to carry out repair works and restore normal operations as quickly as possible. Auxiliary police and station staff were also stationed at platforms and concourse areas to help manage passenger movement throughout the disruption.

For now, commuters travelling on the Kelana Jaya Line may still want to allocate extra travel time and monitor Rapid KL’s official channels for the latest updates. What do you think about the repeated disruptions on the Kelana Jaya Line in Malaysia this year? Should larger upgrades be introduced to improve system reliability and maintenance?
