It has been a few days since news of a Malaysian child being harmed by his own brother, due to related matters of Roblox. Many have expressed concern, including Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, over the influence of online games such as Roblox on children’s behaviour and emotions, emphasising the importance of strengthening protection for young users in the digital world.
Roblox Commits to Strengthening Safety Measures
Following the minister’s concerns, Roblox has assured that it will enhance user safety through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and human moderation to ensure a safer gaming environment. The company also expressed its willingness to work closely with the Malaysian government, particularly in areas of data sharing and compliance with national regulations.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring that Malaysia’s digital ecosystem remains safe, ethical, and constructive—aligning with the vision of nurturing a tech-savvy and responsible generation in the online world.
Concerns Shared Across The Nation
In Hannah Yeoh's post, she voiced her worries as both a minister and a mother about how certain online games can negatively affect the emotional and social development of young people. Popular platform Roblox now boasts over 100 million users worldwide, including more than 1 million players in Malaysia, making it one of the largest gaming communities globally.
The minister stressed that the goal is not only to create a fun digital space but also to build one that educates, develops positive character, and instils strong moral values among the younger generation.
Will Roblox Be Banned?
Previously, the Malaysian government was considering banning Roblox to protect children. However, nothing has been finalised yet as investigations and discussions are still ongoing.
The government is also taking note of the steps taken by other countries. The Australian government is currently considering banning the game Roblox from players aged 16 and under after the game was seen as having a negative influence and was linked to several incidents that have affected the country.
On the other hand, there are other countries that have already banned Roblox. This includes China, Turkey, Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Indonesia and Kuwait still allow Roblox to be played, but have blocked some of its content. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
