Rumour: Acer May Drop 7.9 Tablet to $149.99

While Acer have always been about value - added devices (cheap and affordable), they may be breaking a new price drop record by dropping the price of their Acer Iconia Tab A1-801 tablet from $249 to $149.99. Initially spotted on a French retailer site, the A1-801 may have the following specs:

  • 1.2GHz MediaTek MT8125 ARM Cortex-A9 quad-core CPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB of storage
  • 7.9-inch IPS screen (1024 x 768)
  • 5MP rear camera + VGA front camera
  • 3250 mAh battery
  • 802.11b / g / n,  Bluetooth V4.0, GPS
  • Android 4.2

The screen specs of the Acer A1-801 put in direct competition with Apple's iPad Mini but the $149.99 (RM450) price tag puts it on par with the Single-core Asus Memo Pad. If that is around the same price after it gets ported over to Malaysia then we finally have a brand name tablet to compete with the various RM500 or so China-brand tablets that are available here. If this rumour turns out to be true this could very well be my next tech purchase of the year, so lets all wait and see as it ships sometime around June.
